Province reducing services at some lower-use campgrounds
Edmonton... After a thorough review of usage and maintenance costs, there will be changes in service at 19 provincial sites for the 2010 camping season.
Changes include:
• The camping season will be a few weeks shorter and some services will be reduced at seven provincial parks and recreation areas;
• Access for fishing and boating will continue at eight campgrounds that will be converted from overnight camping to day-use sites; and
• Four low-use sites will be closed, as other campgrounds exist nearby.
“We understand that some Albertans will be disappointed with these reductions, but this will help us to allocate resources to maintain the highest possible level of service throughout our provincial parks system,” said Cindy Ady, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “Closure is a last resort and we are open to proposals by municipalities, private operators or non-profit organizations to operate the sites we’ve identified for closure.”
In total, about 239 campsites, or less than two per cent of all provincial campsites, will be closed for the season. These changes will result in savings of more than $250,000 this year.
In making decisions about potential closures and reduced levels of service, the province considered site usage, the proximity to other camping or recreation opportunities, maintenance costs, and access to activities such as boating or fishing. Visitors will continue to be able to access lakes and rivers for fishing, but in these locations they will find fewer amenities and may need to pack out their garbage.
There are nearly 500 provincial parks in Alberta, supported by a 2010-11 operating budget of $65.3 million. Since 2004, the province has invested more than $250 million in upgrading and replacing park facilities and infrastructure.
The Government of Alberta has a clear plan for a strong economic recovery. The Way Forward will bring Alberta back into a surplus position in three years by trimming government spending; using cash reserves to protect key programs; continuing to invest in public infrastructure; and ensuring that our province's industries are competitive and continue to attract investment to provide jobs and prosperity.
